While Iron Man, Batman and co have been tearing things up on the big screen, Superman has spent the last few years in the cinematic doldrums after the failure of Superman Returns in 2006That all changes this week with the release of Man of Steel, which puts Tudors actor Henry Cavill in the cape and tights and Esquire favourite Michael Shannon in the role of Kryptonian warlord General Zod.

1. The action is intense...

This Superman movie has all the latest digital special effects tech at its disposal so when this Man of Steel takes flight things get pretty supersonic. There are no snoozy protracted speeches on Krypton (ala Marlon Brando) here either - Russell Crowe's Jor-El is a man of action as he trades blows with Zod while the planet collapses around them. We also get to see Clark Kent's hometown Smallville come under fire from invading forces and an almighty Metropolis showdown with Superman careening through skyscrapers.

2. It feels fresh and new...

The original Christopher Reeve Superman film is a bit of a classic, but let's face it the character is long overdue a rethink. The John Williams music is out and there's no Lex Luthor, but under the guidance of The Dark Knight mastermind Christopher Nolan the iconic hero gets a dark makeover. It still feels like classic Superman, but there's enough originality to keep this from being a tired old retread.

3. The red underpants are finally gone...

The Man of Steel has been around for 75 years, but his underwear-on-the-outside approach to fashion always left him looking a bit naff. These have been clinging on for dear life, a holdover from the circus strongman-inspired costume of the original comics. Now, he's finally swapped duds (losing the pants in the process) for a dark blue suit that means business.

4. Amy Adams is Lois Lane...

As a four-time Oscar nominee, Amy Adams brings some serious acting cred to the part of Lois Lane. And she means business in the newsroom, too, showing a modern edge by going behind her editor's back to break the Superman story online. Teri Hatcher and Erica Durance both brought sass and sexiness to the role in the past, but Adams could well be the best Lois Lane yet.

5. It's got two great Superdads...

According to director Zack Snyder's new version of Superman, it takes two Robin Hoods to raise a Man of Steel. Russell Crowe is heroic until his last breath, rocketing his only son to safety as Krypton explodes before returning as a 'ghost' in Superman's Arctic hideaway. Kevin Costner also classes up the joint as Jonathan Kent, channelling his salt-of-the-earth Field of Dreams pop Ray Kinsella.
