Young Hollywood Pokes Fun At Itself In This Is The End. Here's How To Get In On The Funny.

This is the End is Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s new apocalyptic comedy, out this weekend. Here, young Hollywood hole up in James Franco’s pad ahead of the end of the world, play versions of themselves and make lots of in-jokes about their careers.

It’s the funniest farce of the year (at least for the first hour of it) but you’ll still need a primer to get all the lines. Here is that primer.

1. Michael Cera is as nice a dork as his movies make out.

In This is the End, much is made about what a coke addled hornball Michael Cera is, a play on the fact that he only ever plays a dork. So either he’s a dork or he’s a coke addled hornball who plays a dork.

Either way seeing a drug crazed Michael Cera eyeballing the ladies: amusing.

2. James Franco has a rep for playing gay; ergo everyone thinks James Franco is gay.

Most recently, James Franco dragged up as a lady from Psycho in the name of art, the latest in a long line of projects from Hollywood’s go-to guy on Gender Studies & Sexuality.

For This is the End, this means ample opportunity for sight gags on Franco’s sexuality. And by sight gags, we mean penis shaped art work for everyone to guffaw at.

3. There might be a sequel to Pineapple Express.

Well, maybe. A supposed trailer for the sequel to Pineapple Express was released on 1 April this year, a trailer that turned out to be promoting This is the End.

In This is the End, the actors play out the plot of Pineapple Express 2 which either means the idea is still in play or they have killed it off by a parody within a comedy. Still with us?

4. DMX is a U.S. hip-hop veteran known for being a billy no mates.

This is just in case you aren’t familiar with DMX. Since researching this piece, Esquire has become familiar with DMX’s extensive criminal record so we’d like to point out we’re just repeating the joke the film makes rather than suggesting DMX doesn’t have any friends. We love you, big guy.

5. Seth Rogen is aware he didn’t exactly bring it in The Green Hornet.

Cue a number of lines about how Seth Rogen didn’t exactly bring it in The Green Hornet.

6. Jonah Hill: potentially not the easiest guy to get along with.

The plot sees actor Jay Baruchel come back to L.A. to hang out with Rogen. Baruchel doesn’t like Rogen’s Hollywood pals, particularly Jonah Hill who he thinks is a nasty piece of work.

So in the film, Hill plays it real sweet. Is it a nod to the actor’s less than amicable public persona? For more of which, read Hill's super awkward Rolling Stone interview for the film.

7. A US Milky Way is not the same as a UK Milky Way.

A US Milky Way is like more a UK Mars bar so if you had one, say, in an apocalyptic situation, it would be much more filling than a smaller nougat and milk chocolate snack. Joke wise, this is quite important to note.

8. Seth Rogen has had the same idea about Emma Watson as you.

What would everyone’s favourite head girl do in an apocalyptic situation? Clue: it would involve wearing a short skirt and brandishing an axe and pretty much every man at the end of the world digs it, big time.

9. Celebrities falling down a black hole: funny as heck.

That's it.

10. Jonah Hill was Oscar nominated for Moneyball.

What? You actually knew that?

This is the End is out 28 June
