Posters can, of course, be as iconic as the films they’re made to sell – think of Jaws and the impossibly huge mouth swimming ominously upwards, or Ewan McGregor’s sweaty, contorted torso from Trainspotting.
The artists involved in this new exhibition at Somerset House weren’t fortunate enough to be involved the first time around, but their attempts to create eye-catching new art inspired by past celluloid greats are well worth your attention.
17 artists have been commissioned by Film4 to create print to marks their Summer Screen event at the London venue. Notable among them are Kate Gibb, creator of Chemical Brothers album artwork and Peter Strain, whose fantastic work has brought features to life in the pages of Esquire.
Take a look at six that caught our eye below, or see the whole lot between now and 21 August at Somerset House. If you really like them, 200 prints of each are on sale for a mere £40. Best be quick though.
