The tradition approach for movie trailers is to bludgeon you with bangs, crashes and best bits, voiced over by a baritone of comical enthusiasm.
Not so for The Consellor.
Perhaps it's because a line up that includes Ridley Scott (director), Cormac McCarthy (script) and – deep breath – Michael Fassbender, Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem and Brad Pitt needs no additional fanfare, but instead, we’ve been sent three very short, deliberately cryptic teasers for the film, following an only slightly-less puzzling mini trailer released in June.
The first, called simply 'Bed', features Penelope Cruz rolling around in some sheets with Fassbender.
The second, 'Bar', finds Brad Pitt looking (dare we say it) like he’s let himself go a bit.
While the third, 'House', confirms that Javier Bardem is sticking to his strict career plan of looking more and more insane with every film he makes.
All rotate around Fassbender’s character, a respectable lawyer (called simply ‘Counsellor’) who gets drawn into a dangerous world of drug trafficking, all share the same ominious soundtrack and all end with the now obligatory marketing hashtag, in this case '#HaveYouBeenBad'.
Whether all this represents a self-assured strip tease from a movie bound for greatness or the actions of a studio worried it has a turkey on its hands is difficult to tell, but given the aforementioned talent involved, we’re putting our money on the former.
