A long time ago (the early Eighties) in a galaxy far, far away (California), George Lucas was looking for a director to helm the then-final installment of his Star Wars saga. He went on to make 1983's Return of the Jedi himself, but according to Hollywood legend not before offering it to David Lynch first.

Lynch, who had just completed Eraserhead and The Elephant Man, turned Lucas down (but did go on to make oddball sci-fi Dune the year after Jedi).
