Newcastle Brown Ale had a viral marketing hit early in the year with their Super Bowl anti-advert, playing on the UK’s low expectations versus the extravagance of America’s biggest sporting event.

In an attempt to repeat the trick for Independence Day, they’ve employed Stephen Merchant, who in this latest ad ponders what could have been if Great Britain had triumphed in the American Revolutionary War.

It’s an astute ribbing for audiences both sides of the Atlantic – appropriate for a product that divides the two countries like few others.

In America, ‘Newky Broon’ is the most widely imported beer on the market and a source of edgy marketing. Here, we still think of it as the drink of flat cap-wearing Northern OAPs and their whippets. Still, at least we all agree on The Office.
