Boyhood tells the story of Mason (Ellar Coltrane) from the age of 5 right through to legal adulthood at 18. What makes this story different is that both 5 and 18 year old Mason’s are played by the same actor – as the film was shot piece by piece over 12 years.
Created by Richard Linklater and co-starring Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke as Mason’s parents, Boyhood aims to portray the trials and tribulations of growing up.
Linklater is best known as the director of the acclaimed Before trilogy (also starring Hawke), in addition to his coming-of-age films Dazed and Confused and Slacker.
Maybe Linklater’s next project should be Manhood, detailing 18-32 …only thing is we’ll be waiting until 2026.
