Watch The Intense New Trailer For Critically-Acclaimed Foxcatcher

Steve Carell gets serious and Channing Tatum gets violent

Channing Tatum’s career has been going from strength to strength recently, with his knowing performance in 22 Jump Street, his forthcoming role in the Wachowski’s Jupiter Assending and his casting as Gambit in the next X-Men film.

Foxcatcher looks to place Tatum comfortably inside the ‘serious-actor’ bracket, a feat which his co-star Steve Carell has been attempting for some time, with varying results (see Dan In Real Life and Little Miss Sunshine).

Here Carell stars as John Eleuthère du Pont, a multi-millionaire and convicted murderer who trained Olympic freestyle wrestling champion Mark Philip Schultz (tackled by Tatum). Despite the comedy pedigree of the pair, Foxcatcher looks light on laughs as the brooding trailer hints at Schultz obsession and the suspicions of his brother, played by Mark Ruffalo.

There’s something unmistakably Taxi Driver-esque about the final scene of Tatum abusing himself in the mirror.

With Moneyball already under director Bennett Miller’s belt, Foxcatcher looks set to win prizes across the board.

Foxcatcher is released on January 9
