Ok, we’ll admit it, when we first heard that Ice Cube’s 24-year-old son would star as his father (who once famously described himself as a ‘crazy mother*cker named Ice Cube’) in the N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton, we were slightly sceptical.
However, the first full trailer for F. Gary Gray's film has arrived to put our minds at rest, hinting at a gritty, coming of age/overcoming adversary biopic along the lines of that other Ice Cube classic, Boyz n the Hood.
Featuring original members Eazy-E, Dr Dre, Ice Cube MC Ren and Arabian Prince, the film looks at how one of the world's greatest hip-hop collectives came together at a time when gang violence ruled the streets of South Central Los Angeles.
The inclusion of Paul Giamatti as the band’s troubled manager also lends an air of credibility to what could have easily been a by-the-numbers biopic of hip-hop clichés.
Of course, a hip-hop biopic wouldn’t be complete without hydraulic lowriders, pool parties and stacks of dollar bills – oh, and the odd automatic rifle.
You wouldn’t get that in an Ed Sheeran biopic.
We’ll find out how the N.W.A biopic measures up when it’s released on 14 August.
