We weren't alone in thinking Johnny Depp needed a career intervention around the time of the film that can't be named (you know, the one with all the moustaches).
Thankfully, the first trailer for Black Mass seems to see Depp back in Donnie Brasco / Blow territory as real-life Boston gangster Whitey Bulger.
While the crime biopic has arguably been done to death (and the 'just sayin'' scene in the trailer is a clear homage to Goodfellas' 'funny how?' scene) we've got high hopes for Black Mass, least of all because of the more than capable supporting cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Joel Edgerton and Corey Stoll.
Of course, trailers can be deceiving and Depp still displays a penchant for roles that require hours in the make-up chair (ironically, he looks like he's been made up to match his actual age of 51) but all the ingredients are there for, if not a classic, then something Depp can at least hold his head up over.
It's about time, Johnny.
As for Pirates Of The Caribbean 5? Fuggedaboutit.
Black Mass is released 25 September.
