HBO Confirms The Death Of 'Game Of Thrones' Character

...and it's not who you're thinking

Jon Snow wasn't the only character whose fate was thrown into question during Game of Thrones' season five finale.

No, his takedown came after the apparent off-screen slaughter of Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane) by Gwendoline Christie's Brienne of Tarth.

Content with having just the one speculative death on their hands, HBO have now confirmed Stannis' death – despite the killing blow craftily occurring off screen.

The folks over at fan site Watchers on the Wall have transcribed a passage from official series book Game of Thrones: The Noble Hoses of Westeros Season 1-5 (nice punchy title...) which states that "Stannis was killed outside of Winterfell by Brienne of Tarth, who wished to avenge Renly's death."

Game of Thrones returns for a sixth season next spring with early word suggesting to expect the expansion of the Greyjoys, Richard E Grant and a return for Bran (it was coming sooner or later).
