The Descendants is a moving and funny film, and the latest coming-of-middle-age drama by Alexander Payne (Sideways, About Schmidt). George Clooney is Hawaiian lawyer Matt King whose wife is knocked into a coma, leaving him and their two daughters to figure out what to do next.
We’ve seen Clooney act his age (50) before — most recently in The American, Anton Corbijn’s 2010 drama about a hitman having an existential turn. That movie, though, featured Clooney performing a rippling chin-up regime — not your average quinquagenarian.
Matt, finally, is a proper middle-aged schlub. He wears washed-out patterned shirts and belted slacks and keeps his top on at the beach. Fine, he’s probably packing some serious muscle under that T-shirt, but at least he’s a character Clooney can aspire to emulate. Thanks, George, we appreciate the (lack of) effort.
The Descendants is out on 27 January
