The surprising success of Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool, even though it was R-rated (15 certificate),  has got the adult-themed superhero film bandwagon rolling.

X-Men franchise writer and producer Simon Kinberg has confirmed the rumours that Wolverine 3 will be a lot darker than the previous films.

Director James Mangold shot scenes that would have made Hugh Jackman's previous solo outing The Wolverine R-rated, but later decided to release it in a PG-13 cut instead.

The future setting for the film has caused speculation that it might be based on Mark Millar's apocalyptic future story 'Old Man Logan'.

Simon Kinberg couldn't confirm whether Patrick Stewart will be returning as Professor X in the new film but we do know Stephen Merchant, Richard E Grant and Boyd Holbrook will be starring.

The untitled Wolverine sequel will be released in the UK on 2 March 2017.
