They're back - and it's good to see they’re still dressing in shapeless black tops and not looking directly at the camera.
They’ve also stuck to the quietly mournful electronica that got everybody so jazzed about their self-titled 2009 debut. Apparently Jamie xx (above, right) did threaten to go a bit dancey with this one, a nod to the banging club scene they missed out on in their younger days, but his band-mates Romy and Oliver thankfully whispered him down (which may be what they’re sniggering about).
First single and first song on the album Angels (below) sees Romy Madley Croft opening her heart up on the power of love. Have they gone soft? Don't worry, listen all the way through and you'll see that well-crafted misery and enjoyable melancholy remain the order of the day.
Coexist, the new album by the xx, is out on 10 September (Young Turks)
