The hieroglyphic of the modern man, it is hard to remember how we spiced up a conversation or illustrated our hangovers before the emoji.
Yet despite an already extensive catalogue of faces and inanimate objects, sometimes you just don't have the exact flag or vegetable you need to convey your situation. Which is why the news that Unicode Consortium has approved 72 new emoji is to be welcomed.
The additions follow a large amount of user feedback and suggestions, and will be rolled out this month.
The new release - expected for June - includes many modern reference points including a 'Rolling on the Floor Laughing' emoji and a 'A Hand Taking a Selfie' emoji.
Others that may well gain cult status include a terrifying clown, the long-awaited 'Fingers Crossed' and the inspired addition of 'Almost-Vomiting Face' - sure to be huge around the festive period.
Most notably, Unicode seem to have acknowledged the controversial usage of the aubergine to denote a penis and given users two new, equally suggestive food items that offer varying size options.
The cucumber and baguette may never be pure again.
