The Most Cringe-Worthy New Additions To The Oxford English Dictionary

We are living in YOLO times, apparently

Reading the recent additions to the Oxford English Dictionary, it sounds like the editor either has a teenager daughter or a new girlfriend he's trying to impress by being down with the kids.

Last year FOMO (fear of missing out) was added to the 132 year old tome from which we supposedly derive the basis of the English language, and this year the madness continues with the addition of more naff colloquialisms and trendy anachronisms, from YOLO to yogalates.

When asked about the additions cheif editor Michael Proffitt said the update,"Confirms the OED as one of the largest and longest-running language research projects in the world."

Indeed. A few of the most worrying entries include:

  1. Moobs - Unusually prominent breasts on a man, typically as a result of excess fat.
  2. YOLO - An acronym meaning 'you only live once'.
  3. Chefdom - A noun meaning the overall fact, state, or positioning of becoming a chef.
  4. Cheeseball - Someone or something lacking taste, style, or originality; or the breaded and deep fried cheese appetiser
  5. Fuhgeddaboudit - a US colloquialism, associated especially with New York and New Jersey, reflecting an attempted regional pronunciation of the phrase 'forget about it' - used to indicate a suggested scenario is unlikely or undesirable.
  6. Yogalates - used when Pilates exercises are combined with the postures and breathing techniques of yoga
  7. Swirlie an act of forcibly immersing a person's head in the bowl of a toilet as it is flushed, typically as a practical joke.

But the most non-sensical entry of all?

Cheese eater - a person who eats cheese; a person who appreciates or routinely consumes cheese.

Stop the world, we want to get off.
