In 2012 voter turnout dropped to 58.2 percent of eligible voters from the 61.6 percent who voted in the 2008 presidential election. What was also troubling about 2012 voter turnout is that it saw a reverse of the increase in youth voters from the previous presidential election. In 2012, the turnout of 18-to-24-year-olds fell to 41.2 percent from 48.5 percent in 2008. Millennials themselves make up a fourth of the age-eligible electorate, which means harnessing these voters, along with growing numbers of black and hispanic voters, is key for Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.
So, it's imperative that the eligible youth electorate registers to vote. That's why, during the months leading up to 8 November, there will be relentless campaigns to get young people to vote. Most recently, a ton of celebrities, including Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson, appeared in a (actually pretty funny and self-aware) video admonishing Donald Trump for being a "racist coward."
Today, Katy Perry shared another video aimed at igniting the Millennial electorate. In this one she tells the viewer to vote in any state. "This year you can look like shit when you vote," Perry explained. This means you can head to the polls in a child's onesie, as a hot guy in kids briefs, or in nothing but a t-shirt.
Or, you could vote by post, which would mean you'd miss Perry getting arrested for public indecency when she tries to vote completely naked. America is great, but not that great.
