Betting on the election results is illegal in America, but not here in the U.K, and with betting companies offering crazy odds on the seemingly slim chance of The Donald taking the Oval Office there were some big payouts.

According to the Wall Street Journal, "The U.S. election attracted more bets than any other political gamble ever in the U.K., with what bookies estimate at around £200 million worth of wagers."

Even as late as Tuesday most bookmakers only gave Trump a 20% chance of winning and 69% of bets were placed on the celebrity Wotsit skin flap.

According to The Metro, Iranian-British real estate mogul Vincent Tchenguiz won £1.2 million by betting £350,000 on Trump with bets placed on both Betfair and Spreadex.

The Independent also reports that an anonymous gambler won £500,000 betting £200,000 on Trump £500,000 betting £200,000 on Trump. There were also various six-figure wagers placed on Clinton and other American candidates which were obviously less fruitful. Elsewhere Paddy Power had a £4m payout after Clinton lost, the biggest in their history.

Speaking to the Metro the property magnate Tchenguiz said, "I'm surprised by how everybody is stunned that [Trump] actually won. I didn't think that it was so black and white. But people are so shocked – I should have got much better odds."
