Even with the bank-breaking signings this summer of Pogba and Zlatan, Manchester United aren't quite flying this season.

To remedy that, Jose Mourinho has another trick up his sleeve, and unsurprisingly it involves bucket loads of cash and the best footballer in the world.

According to Marketing Deportivo, United's sponsor adidas are disappointed with the club's performance this season and how it might reflect on their brand. As they sponsor the Argentinian striker but not his current club Barca (who are sponsored by Nike), they are willing to collude with United to get Messi on board and turn the club around.

Messi's contract with Barcelona is up in 2018 and United and adidas are apparently set to offer him £85m to not renew with the Spanish club. This is in addition to a £42m contract they would offer plus meeting his buy-out clause of £213m.

Sort of makes Pogba look like piggy bank money.

But before United fans get too excited at the prospect of the five time Ballon d'Or winning rocking up at Old Trafford, it is worth remembering their offers for big Spanish team players like Neymar, Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos haven't come off before. That and reportedly Manchester City are going to offer £195.6m for Messi to join their ranks. Let the fighting begin.
