The Change.org campaign, Electoral college: make Hillary Clinton President has now amassed 4.74 million signatures in the lead up to the electoral college casting their votes for president on December 19. According to WIRED, this "makes the petition the largest in the website's nine-year history."
Despite losing the electoral college by 232 votes to Trump's 306, Clinton's lead in the popular vote now exceeds 2.6 million. This means despite losing the presidency she has a greater lead over her rival than the previous 10 presidents to take office. The disparity between the electoral college and popular vote has lead many to feel disenfranchised with a system where their vote doesn't count in red or blue states, with many people wishing to abolish the electoral college system.
The petition, set up by Daniel Brezenoff, argues, "Mr. Trump is unfit to serve. His scapegoating of so many Americans, and his impulsivity, bullying, lying, admitted history of sexual assault, and utter lack of experience make him a danger to the Republic."
"We are calling on "Conscientious Electors" to protect the Constitution from Donald Trump, and to support the national popular vote winner."
21 states have faithless electors who aren't required to vote for a pledged candidate and seven have already come out to say they will break party ranks to stop Trump. It seems unlikely this will overturn the result so start praying for a Christmas miracle.
