Game of the week - Rage

If you like your shooters - and, yes, we do like our shooters here at Esquire (as we might have mentioned before once or twice) - you may have heard of iD Software. These are the guys who brought grateful gamers the masterpieces Doom and Quake. Well, they are back with what looks to be one of the best first-person shooters we've seen in some time.

Set in a post-apocalyptic America in the near future with some serious mutant action, gun play and top driving sections, Rage might be simply described as MotorStorm meets Mad Max – but with an open world to explore and the addition of some RPG elements, it offers a lot more character than your run-of-the-mill combat game.

The weapons are, in fact, a good indicator of the quality of Rage – there aren't 17 different types of rifle you'll never bother to use, just a few select weapons you will grow to love, and all customisable (even the pistol you're given at the very start). Quality, not quantity, you see.

Our favourite is the majestic wingstick: a bladed boomerang that allows you to casually decapitate enemies in a single throw. Add in side missions, races, co-op and multiplayer battles and you'll need a hell of a lot of time on your hands to finish everything this polished shooter has to offer. So dig out your old biker jacket, stick on Tina Turner's "We Don't Need Another Hero" and establish a brave new world.

Rage is out now on October 7, PC, Xbox 360 and PS3, www.rage.com
