An Italian vet who caused internet outrage after posing with a lion he shot while on an African safari in 2015, has died while taking part in a game shoot in the hills above Turin.
Luciano Ponzetto, 55, slipped while hunting birds in the hills above the northern Italian city, falling 100ft into a ravine in the Colle delle Oche.
Ponzetto became notorious, even receiving death threats, after posting photographs on Instagram of him next to trophy kills that included a lion, hogs and deer.
An Italian police spokesman told The Sun, "We were called by the mountain rescue services who had been alerted to the incident by someone who was out with him.
"His body was recovered by helicopter and taken to a local hospital.
"It looks like he slipped and fell when he was out hunting. He died instantly and there was nothing that could be done."
Ponzetto was forced to step down as the head of a kennel society last year after receiving sustained pressure from campaigners and social media users.
At the time he said: "I am being criticised by people who do not know me, I have always loved my work and I have always loved animals.
"I will carry on hunting until the law changes."
