Manchester United have courted Neymar for years - a campaign for his signature that climaxed this year with his agent saying it came "close" to becoming a done deal.
United couldn't have done more, yet still the Brazilian Barcelona star spurned their advances, refusing to leave the warm beaches of Spain for the northern reaches of England (though he never gave a satisfactory reason why).
But now, finally, the 24-year-old has revealed who he really wanted to play for all along: Brazilian club Flamengo.
Speaking after a charity match organised by Brazil legend Zico on Wednesday, Neymar admitted his dream was to play, not for Manchester United, but for Rio de Janeiro's biggest club, at the iconic Maracana Stadium every week.
'It would be a great honour for me to play for Flamengo, at the Maracana,' he said. 'I'd be playing here every day. It's a club I'd love to play for.'
Sorry, Jose, maybe Lionel Messi could make himself available instead?
