So, Anne Hathaway plays Emma Morley in One Day. This, according to some fans of David Nicholls’ stupendously popular book of the same name about the will-they-won’t-they friendship between a Yorkshire lass and a Cotswolds posho, is not a good thing.
Because Anne Hathaway, as you will know if you saw The Devil Wears Prada or Love & Other Drugs, is gorgeous, talented and American. What she’s not, as the One Day trailer confirms, is a sour-faced English poppet who can deliver a convincing Dales drawl.
But hold up one pudding-chewing minute. Her compatriots are happy to forgive British actors their abysmal US accents (*cough* Ray Winstone *cough*) so how about cutting Hathaway a little transatlantic slack? We’d certainly rather watch 90-odd minutes of Hathaway with wonky glasses and wonkier vowels than a home-grown actress with authentic “ee by gums” and a face as grim as the tide-line on a coalminer’s bathtub.
If you agree, One Day is out in cinemas today. If you don’t, Last of the Summer Wine will be showing on UKTV Gold from now until the apocalypse.
