No doubt sharks are a powerful, majestic and vital part of our ever more fragile eco system; stoic, beady-eyed ancient forces of nature whose environments should be respected and preserved... but they are also absolutely terrifying, as one young surfer discovered firsthand.

Capturing the moment his son rode straight over a great white, Chris Hasson's photo of his 10-year-old's extremely close encounter is the stuff of potential nightmares.

Speaking to ABC, Chris said he saw something in the water just before taking the shot but his son was already riding the wave before he could call to him.

"There were a couple of guys out, including Eden, and I was on the rocks. I had been swimming in and out with flippers with my five-year-old and 12-year-old daughters and decided I had enough of that.

"My daughter came in 10 minutes earlier and that probably proves why women live longer than men. I saw something just before that and I was about to call him in but he took off on a wave and just click, click, click, click, click.

"Then I just had a gut feeling and so I zoomed in and went wow. I quickly called everyone in and obviously the rest is history."

Duh, duh, duh, duh, duh, duh, DUH DUH DUH

Danny Bucher, a marine biology professor at Southern Cross University, told the news website that the shark appeared to be a white pointer, more commonly known as a great white.

"From the look of it, it looks like it's started to roll on its back as it has gone through the wave, he said."

"That would probably indicate that it's trying to actually swim away from the approaching board."

While the whole ordeal seems pretty intense, the person at the centre of it all, 10-year-old Eden, remained indifferent, saying to his dad: "Lucky I didn't fall off, then."
