The iPhone 8 Will Reportedly Scrap Touch ID For Something Much, Much Cooler

Tres Futuriste

While the world continues to bathe in the warm, rose-scented waters of nostalgia over the news that Nokia is bringing back its original indestructible phone, Apple has something much slicker and more futuristic in the works, namely: facial recognition scanning.

It was announced this week that Apple has bought Israeli startup RealFace, a company that creates facial recognition software, news that only adds to the rumours that Apple will roll out iris scanning with the iPhone 8, which will likely be released next year.

While the TouchID technology that Apple has been utlising for the past few years has been viewed as mostly successful, it has suffered inconsistency issues during wet and humid conditions.

As cool as this all sounds, the consequence of facial recognition technology would likely require users to hold their phones upright and stare at the front-facing camera, with no foreign objects — glasses, deviating facial hair — obscuring the view in order for the scanner to process, which sounds like a bit of a pain really.

We're sure the clever androids people at Apple will think of something.
