The Conservative MP was questioned about the comment by Sky News presenter Sophy Ridge on Sunday. As Ridge read the tweet out loud, which said: "The United Kingdom is one of the few countries in the European Union that does not need to bury its 20th century history," Dr Fox stood his ground and rejected her claim that he had sent it.

"As a point of clarification, I didn't send that tweet," he said, without realising a giant picture of his statement had appeared behind him.

"It was taken from a speech I did about a year-and-a-half ago and it was tweeted, I think, by The Guardian and it was an incomplete reference in any case."

A spokesman for Dr Fox told The Evening Standard: "The tweet from March 2016 is an incomplete quote from over a year ago."

It can still be found on his Twitter feed.
