Britain doesn't have a lot over, say, Australia in the holiday destination stakes… better beer, maybe. Bit easier to get around. And less deadly animals, right? Surely that at least.
Think again. Fisherman dangling their rods off the normally placid waters of Hartland Point in Devon last week hooked a 500lbs, 9 foot long, altogether-fuck-off shark – one of the biggest ever caught in British waters.
It was caught by a man called Shaun Collins-Lyndsay and, with the help of various other able seaman, took nearly two hours to reel in.
The shark was a porbeagle, a type related to great whites that have showing up in increasing numbers around Britain this year.
Another man present for the catch, Dan Hawkins from Reel Deal Chartered, told Metro: "It was huge – you could see from the size of its belly how big it was. It could have been 500Ibs – she was a big fish.
"It took nearly two hours to reel her in. It's the biggest I've seen. Each crew member had a ten minute turn reeling her in – it was some fight."
So there you have it. If you're planning a trip to the south coast this summer, watch out of for fins.
