Johnny Depp will play the eccentric McAfee antivirus software mogul John McAfee, who took his vast fortune and decamped to the Belize jungle in upcoming biopic King of the Jungle.

The dark comedy is based on Joshua Davis' 2012 Wired article John McAfee's Last Stand, which depicts Davis' bizarre experience at the computer progammer's compound in Belize, described as a "Colonel Kurtz-like compound of guns, sex and madness".

Alleged murder and drug trafficking are also interwoven in the extraordinary story, which all began after McAfee sold almost everything he owned in 2009 to declare he was going on the hunt for natural antibiotics in the Belize rain forest.

The movie is being written by Ed Wood and The People Vs OJ Simpson's Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (via The Hollywood Reporter).

In 2012, the British-born entrepreneur became 'a person of interest' over the alleged murder of his neighbor, Greg Faulland (via The Guardian) near his home off the Belize coast. He told Wired magazine at the time that he knew nothing about Faull's murder, but was worried he may have been the intended target of the armed attacker.

"I thought maybe they were coming for me. They mistook him for me. They got the wrong house," McAfee told Wired at the time. "He's dead. They killed him. It spooked me out."

Filming will begin later this year.
