The conspiracy theory that keeps on giving

Conspiracy theories relating to celebrity deaths are nothing new.

If the internet is to be believed, then Elvis might still be knocking about, Tupac is being contained as a C.I.A witness and Paul McCartney actually died in 1966, but there's one theory in particular that just refuses to die out... and it's related to Avril Lavigne.

Yeah, that Avril Lavigne.

On the 15th anniversary of 'Complicated', the song that gave the Canadian singer her 15 minutes of fame, one Twitter user has reignited the theory that, actually, Avril Lavigne is dead and has been replaced by a lookalike.

In the thread, it's alleged that the singer took her own life in late 2003 after her grandfather's death.

Because her supposed "death" occurred at the peak of her career, Avril Lavigne's record label hired a lookalike called Melissa Vandella to impersonate her, a job that she continues to do to this very day.

For reasons beyond our powers of comprehension, this theory has been retweeted more than 150,000 times, which suggests that people might have actually spent time considering its plausibility. That or we're all just trying to distract ourselves from real life with baseless viral nonsense.

It's probably that, isn't it?

But what proof do these Twitter super sleuths possess, we hear you cry? Well, there's this side-by-side comparison that looks like the same person, only a bit older... which is exactly what's happened to Avril Lavigne in the past 15 years.

That's about it.

Never change, internet.
