Many a noble idea has failed because it made a crucial miscalculation about the nature of humankind: specifically, than given the chance to take the piss, we always will.

Joining the scrapheap alongside the internet, Communism and those self-service newspaper stands they used to have in WH Smiths is this PR stunt by Walkers crisps, that through the same fatal overestimation of the general public ended up showing a smiling Gary Lineker holding up a photo of Britain's worst ever sex offender.

The crisp company's #WalkersWave campaign encouraged its follower to tweet a picture of themselves, which would then automatically appear in Gary's hands.

Entrants were supposed to be lured in by the prospect of potentially winning tickets to the Champion's League final, but many saw a more tantalising prospect instead: to troll Walkers and England's former poacher with pictures of Jimmy Savile, Harold Shipman and various other monsters from history.
