Ex-Newcastle United footballer Cheick Tiote has died, aged just 30.

Reports from China, where he joined Beijing Enterprises FC for an undisclosed fee earlier this year, suggest he collapsing during training this afternoon.

The player's agent confirmed the sad news via a journalist for the Newcastle Evening Chronicle.

The Ivorian's former team-mate at the Magpies Demba Ba, tweeted: "may Allah gives grant you jannah brother Tiote."

Goalkeeper Tim Krul also paid tribute.

Tiote's career began at Belgian side Anderlecht before he moved to FC Twente in Holland. There he caught the eye of Newcastle scouts after establishing himself as a hard-tackling midfielder enforcer.

Signing for the Toon in 2010, he made over 150 appearances for the club. Tiote's most memorable moment at Newcastle was scoring a sublime equaliser in the thrilling 4-4 draw with Arsenal in 2011.
