Back in 2002, it took a real leap of faith to buy the brand new Xbox over a PlayStation 2 or GameCube. Sure it looked impressive, but it was a pricey beast and Microsoft was completely fresh to the fiercely competitive console wars.
But those who took the risk were rewarded with revolutionary online play, startling graphics, and, er... the worst video game controller ever conceived by man. The 'Duke'.
It was ginormous – Guinness World Record ginormous – and completely unwieldy. Even adults struggled to maneuver their thumbs around it. It was quickly replaced by a far more traditional controller that hasn't been altered much since.
The cruel and unusual 'Duke' has long been written off as one of gaming's biggest mistakes, so naturally Microsoft are looking to resurrect it for the Xbox One.
The hardware giants revealed that they're teaming up with accessory maker Hyperkin to bring the notorious controller back by the end of the year, describing it as a "faithful recreation of the original controller's form factor."
The decision makes slightly – but still not much – more sense with the news that Microsoft are adding backwards compatibility for original Xbox games to the Xbox One too.
