The date for the most ludicrous professional bout since Rocky Balboa took on wrestling champion 'Thunderlips' in Rocky III has been set.
Boxing Champion Floyd Mayweather and MMA Champion Conor McGregor's much-hyped fight has been set for 26 August, and will take place at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, according to Yahoo Sports. Both men appear to have confirmed as much on social media.
McGregor has previously described the match up as "historic", while Mayweather – who will risk perfect, 49 fight unbeaten record – told his fans a few weeks ago "Everybody get your phones out and get this on the internet ASAP. I'm coming out of retirement to fight Conor McGregor, so right now I'm not retired."
The 16,800 capacity MGM has previously hosted such legendary fights as Manny Pacquiao v Floyd Mayweather and Evander Holyfield v Mike Tyson.
As for the million-dollar question - will McGregor have to out-box a man generally considered one of the finest boxers of all time, or will he be allowed to round house kick Mayweather in the neck, leap on his prostate body and punch him repeatedly in the head as in his native sport? - the answer, insanely for the Irishman, is the latter. McGregor's boxing license was was granted by the California State Athletic Commission in December.
Actually, the real million-dollar question – as in how many each of them will pocket – has already been answered. And with the fight distributed via Showtime pay-per-view with Mayweather Promotions as the lead promoter, that answer is 'probably around £78.4m each'.
