Remember a few years ago when Wayne Rooney became the first footballer to earn £200,000 per -week and everyone lost their minds? Well now Barcelona and Lionel Messi are about to make that contract look like chump change.

In the diamond-encrusted Gomorrah that is modern football, it's difficult to be shocked by anything relating to money or excess. £89 million for a player? (Pogba) Whatever. Agents buying islands? (Jorge Mendes) Sounds about right. So the news that Messi is about to be offered a £1 million per week deal hardly seems that surprising.

As reported by The Times, Barca are set to offer their pint-sized talisman and all-time record goal scorer a new £54.8 million-per-year contract, making him far and away the highest paid player in the world.

Having stalled over previous contracts offered to him by the Barcelona board, it was rumoured that Messi might attempt a move away from the Nou Camp, possibly to Pep Guardiola's City, but that looks like a total pipe dream now.

Now 30, Messi has signed the deal until 2021, which will see him collect £220 million if he sees it all the way through... and that's BEFORE performance-related bonuses.

In comparison, Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid earns a paltry £365,000 per-week. Although his commercial clout more than makes up for it.
