We're only two games into the new season but the Resurrection of Wayne Rooney is already the Premier League's most compelling subplot.

The former England captain looked more or less spent last year after being outshone by emerging tyros and ageing Swedes alike, before quietly leaving Manchester United and heading for the respectable retirement home of Everton.

Few predicted the move would prove much more than a sentimental shirt selling exercise for the perennially mid-table club, but then Rooney appeared looking leaner than ever to slot home the winner against Stoke on the opening day and, last night, notched up another – his 200th PL goal - away against Manchester City.

Interviewed on Sky after the match, Rooney was at his twinkly-eyed best, responding to former teammate Gary Neville's question "how sweet was it scoring at the Etihad?" by asking "What? Again?" before cracking a grin wider than the River Mersey.

For all Everton is Rooney's boyhood club and - frankly - the best one still prepared to take a chance on him in his 30s, spoiling things for Manchester United's derby rivals clearly still delights England's all time top goalscorer.

Who knows how long the Resurrection of Wayne Rooney will last – possibly two games, possibly half a season – but let's enjoy it while it lasts.

Unless you support City, of course.
