The Manual - How to throw a tomahawk

Today's essential manskill, how to throw a tomahawk, comes to us courtesy of Anna Fur Laxis, burlesque tomahawk thrower.

Before you get started

Buy some slices of tree trunk from a timber yard, nail them to your backdrop. Never throw at living trees. Flat ground in an open space is the best, but make sure you allow for the fact that the tomahawk may bounce a fair distance away from the target if the blades don’t stick. Never throw while wearing open-toed shoes.

Stance/Distance from Target

1 Most tomahawks have a handle length of 18in. Usually a thrower will need to stand about 13ft away from the target for the hawk to complete one full spin.

2 Hold the tomahawk handle as you would a hammer. Make sure you hold the handle in the same place and with the same style of grip each time for consistency.

3 Adopt a comfortable stance, one leg in front. Bring the tomahawk up in a smooth motion, and, whilst focusing on your target, bring your arm down in a smooth sweep and release. Keep your arm in an even plane the whole time for a straight aim.

4 If the tomahawk doesn’t stick in the target the first time, adjust your distance from the target as you may be standing too close to the target to allow the hawk to complete its spin in the air. Consistency is key.
