Following their 2-1 defeat to La Liga new boys Girona, Real Madrid are now eight points behind runaway leaders Barcelona – and it's only October.
Zidane's team has suffered a stuttering start to the season following their league win last year. No Real Madrid team has ever recovered from an 8 point gap to win the championship, and Los Blancos may now have to set their sights on cup success instead.
And when you look at the stats, there's one man who simply isn't carrying his weight: Cristiano Ronaldo.
The 32-year-old Ballon d'Or winner has the worst conversion rate of all goal scorers in Europe's top 5 leagues this season (2.5%), and has only netted one goal in the La Liga this season. In fairness he has scored five goals in three games in the Champions League, but the Portguese has lost his clinical touch on the domestic stage.
Messi, on the other hand, has scored 12 in 10 games as Barcelona sit atop the league with 28 points. Ouch.
Things could also go from bad to worse for Ronaldo as he might face a lengthy ban, after being caught in a clash with Pere Pons over the weekend.
Oh Ronnie. Don't worry, it's Champions League week.
