Comedy talk show Have I Got News For You hinges upon the panel being incredibly quick at comebacks – which is why it was all the more impressive this weekend when Jo Brand delivered a comment on sexism which rendered the all-male panel somewhat speechless.
The comedians were discussing the Westminster sexual harassment scandal which has so far caused Michael Fallon to resign and seen Damian Green come under fire. One headline which flashed up on the screen was about an MP who took his personal trainer to the cinema, an incident which Ian Hislop thought was very amusing.
"Some of this is not high-level crime, is it?" he laughed. "Not compared to Putin or Trump."
Admittedly it doesn't seem particularly nefarious, but as Brand intelligently interjected to point out, it is more about a pattern of behaviour.
"If I can just say – as the only representative of the female gender here today – I know it's not high-level," she said. "But it doesn't have to be high-level for women to feel under siege in somewhere like the House of Commons."
"Actually, women, if you're constantly being harassed, even in a small way, that builds up and that wears you down."
Brand received strong applause from the audience before joking, "Sorry, I thought I was on Question Time for a minute."
Hislop was quick to back down saying, "As you point out, with four blokes sitting around you we're hardly in a position to say, 'That's rubbish'."
Twitter was awash with praise for Brand for pointing it it isn't just criminal harassment we should be paying attention to.
