Miffed, we imagine, that his work has become the soundtrack to each and every X Factor sob story, Jon (Jónsi) Thor Birgisson – lead singer of Icelandic supergroup, Sigur Rós – has struck out on his own for the first time, with solo album, Go.
The hard copy has been floating around the office for a few weeks now, and it’s taken us that long to get our heads around Jónsi’s elfish twinkling. Following a few high-volume plays however, the Sigur Rós frontman seems to have won us over.
Lead track ‘Go Do’ takes its cue from Sigur Rós’ sweeping musical landscapes, combining the form with pulsing beats, tangible melodies and high-tempo positivity.
Switching seamlessly between English and his native Icelandic tongue, tracks such as ‘Sinking Friendships’, ‘Boy Lilikoi’ and ‘Sticks & Stones’ spellbind with unintelligible incantations and bouts of instrumental experimentation. One for fans of Sigur Rós who crave some extra oomph.
