The Coffee Table Read

The Impossible Collection of Cars

Owning the world's greatest collection of cars is an impossible dream for most of us. Even former Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott could only stretch as far as two Jaguars. So what if every luxury car from the 20th century could be found in one place? There is such a place. Unfortunately, it's in a book.

We've always thought that buying books about things we can't yet afford is the sensible, some might say classy, choice. After all, why waste money on a gas guzzler you're only going to end up waxing endlessly while your family slowly falls out of love with you?

The impossible collection of cars is the ideal halfway house, providing you all the petrol porn you'll need in your life with none of the insurance worries.

Dan Neil, a car columnist for the Wall Street Journal, has collected information about the world's classic cars dating back as far as 1903. With models from the Ford Model T Runabout (the sort of car Boardwalk Empire's prop design department would kill for) to the Ferrari i66, most famously pictured with James Dean at the wheel, there's something for everyone.

The price tag isn't cheap - £442 to be exact - and yes, you could buy an actual, very poor quality car, for that. But this book will definitely look better in your living room.
