What is America? As questions go, it’s about as nebulous as they come. Ask an Alaskan lumberjack, a Californian beach bum or a blue blazered Ivy Leaguer and you’ll get a different answer every time. Still, the 50 States Project looks to answer this very question – not in words, but through photographs.
The brainchild of photography curator Stuart Pilkington, its mission is to bring together 50 photographers from all over the US, one from each state, and set them themes to base their work on: “people” and “habitat” being the categories selected so far.
A year long experiment, by the end of its run, 300 pictures will be compiled and uploaded to www.50statesproject.net, including shots like these:
