The Weeknd – "The Town"
After one compilation album, three mixtapes, eight singles and ten music videos, The Weeknd gets around to releasing his first album. The whole thing is streaming over at npr.org as of today, a week early. It’s all great, particularly this track.
Paul McCartney – "New"
If anyone is allowed to steal carte blanche from The Beatles it’s probably Paul McCartney. This Revolver-y tune is the first from his upcoming Mark Ronson-produced album, also called New.
Arctic Monkeys – "Arabella"
Another riffy new Arctic Monkeys song, premiered on Saturday night at the Zurich Open Air Festival. Album AM is out September 9.
Chlöe Howl – "How Proud"
Eighteen-year-old Chlöe Howl is being positioned as the new authentic voice of bolshy youth-pop, the next Kate Nash or Lily Allen: "I’m never going to pretend it’s poetic being a teenager because it’s gross", etc, etc.Though Kate Nash never wrote a song as good as ‘How Proud’. From her new EP, No Strings.
1975 – "Sex"
Re-recorded from the single, the best song from the Eighties-obsessed Mancunians new album, out today.
Alexander O’Neal – "Criticize (Remix)"
Someone who actually was making records in the Eighties. From 12”/80s Club Classics, the latest in the well-curated 12”/80s dance mix series, with the good cover art. Out today.
