It's a message borne out by the hundreds of photographs and thousands of stories in The Story Of Design, a new doorstop (useful) of a book, that charts the evolution of design from the prehistoric era to the digital age. Here, we've choosen our 12 favourites from it.

Meanwhile, anyone with 'designs' on a copy of the book for themselves can get it for a knockdown price, £18.99 inc P&P by calling 0844 576 8120 and quoting AD195, until 20th December.

The Story Of Design (Goodman-Fiell) is out now, £30.
