The Book

Opening Line of the Month

“First, I’ll tell about the robbery our parents committed. Then the murders, which happened later.”

From Canada, the new novel by American master Richard Ford. A hard left turn into the past after his magnificent contemporary Frank Bascombe trilogy (The Sportswriter, Independence Day, The Lay of the Land), Canada is as stately as an ancient Cadillac and as sombre as a Robert Frank photo.

Set in 1960, it follows callow teen Dell Parsons from family catastrophe in rural Montana to even murkier business in frontier Saskatchewan. A slow burn, for sure, but worth the not inconsiderable effort.
