The Q&A

Dave Franco

In comedy Bad Neighbours, Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne play new parents warring with next-doors from hell in the form of a US college fraternity, led by Zac Efron and Dave Franco.

While his brother James is all about arty Hollywood obfuscation, if it’s juvenile smarts you want, Dave is your guy: perfecting the high school cock-jock in 21 Jump Street (not to mention 22 Jump Street, out on 6 June) and performing cult skits on Will Ferrell’s Funny or Die website.

Here, we catch up with him.

In Bad Neighbours you play a frat boy but in real life you’re closer to the married couple of the film [he’s dating Mad Men’s Alison Brie]. How did that work out?
I mean it all stems from the fact I look like I’m 17. I’ve come to accept that. At least I am not playing high-school students anymore. The fact that I am playing a college senior instead of a high-school senior feels like a win to me.

Is there a downside to looking so fresh?
Girls closer to my age typically look a lot older than me, so that makes it much more difficult for them to see me as a realistic partner because they don’t want to be walking around with this little foetus.

You need some hard living to age you.
I went to USC [University of Southern California], which is a crazy party school, and I had an amazing few years of partying after college. It’s out of my system at this stage, so I’m going to have to find a different way to fuck myself up and help myself age quicker than a healthy person would.

Have you ever been in a college fraternity?
I have not. I never had the intention of joining a fraternity and I stuck to that; a lot of my friends were in fraternities and they would invite me to their parties. But it was never 100 per cent comfortable because the rest of the guys in the fraternity gave me funny sideways glances sometimes because I didn’t earn my way into these parties.

Are you as different from your older brother James as your career paths suggest?
I enjoy my downtime. I am not attending 10 colleges at the same time while trying to direct a movie while trying to act in a different movie across the country all at the same time. When I hear about the endeavours he’s tackling, maybe I have a millisecond of shock but then I check myself and think: what the hell else would he do? Of course he’s recreating the infamous scene from the Al Pacino movie Cruising where he’s in a gay fetish club.

At least you found common ground in some of your Funny or Die clips. Were you surprised those took off the way they did?
As sick and twisted and depraved as they may be, they were at least an accurate representation of my sense of humour. If you do a video on Funny or Die, more people could potentially see it than if you do an independent film. A huge reason I got the role in 21 Jump Street was my 'You’re So Hot' video. The fact that a video where I’m telling Chris Mintz-Plasse [who also stars in Bad Neighbours] how much I want to have sex with him launched my career is insane.

If there’s one thing Dave Franco doesn’t have, it’s shame. Sex, nudity, rap: if it’s for a viral video, he’ll do it. These five clips alone have amassed 7.7m views – which is a lot of people looking at your penis.
