60s Biker Gangs

Welcome to the clubhouse of the Outlaws, Chicago’s most fearsome motorcycle outfit.

We wouldn’t have wanted to venture much closer (let alone comment on their signage), but photographer Danny Lyon is a braver sort.

He embedded with the gang for four years in the mid-Sixties, crossing the US on long rides and race-meets, resulting in an extraordinary set of photographs that will be on display at Atlas Gallery in London this month.

His startling images capture a world of slick-haired men called “Cockroach” and “Cowboy” who care little for road safety or conventional hygiene and if it doesn’t make you want to rush out and buy a leather jacket – or even a Harley – we don’t know what will.

Danny Lyon: The Bikeriders runs from 19 June to 16 August at Atlas Gallery, London. atlasgallery.com
