Keanu Reeves Finally Becomes Self-Aware In The John Wick Trailer

The man known as Neo embraces absurdist action in the first trailer for John Wick

From playing a straight-faced surfer cop in Point Break to wooden, bullet-bending saviour of the future in The Matrix, Reeves has been taking himself incredibly seriously since his breakthrough as a goofy stoner in 1981's Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.

Which is why the first trailer for his latest film, John Wick, is particularly refreshing – it looks like the 50-year-old has remembered how to have some fun again.

A revenge flick in the old-school mould, Reeves’ titular hard man brings the pain to Game Of Thrones’ Alfie Allen after Allen and his cronies break in and murder Reeves’ dog.

With darkly comic dialogue (“that dog was a final gift from my dying wife”) and great-looking action scenes, this could be the best film Reeves has done in years. As the man himself says in the trailer “People keep asking if I’m back. Yeah, I’m thinking I’m back.”

John Wick is released in the US on 24 October, with a UK release likely to follow.

Has Reeves finally found his form?
