A few tedious issues permitting – Green Cards, health insurance, etc. – there’s nowhere we’d rather live than California, where the waitress handing over your cup of coffee is likely to be among the hottest girls you’ve never met.
A new book by photographer Sasha Eisenman, who has shot for Vogue, Interview and, as you can probably twig, Playboy, celebrates the carefree spirit of a selection of Californian girls in their element.
Here, he explains their attraction (in the unlikely event you need convincing).
You grew up in California. According to Katy Perry, California girls wear Daisy Dukes, bikinis on top, and will melt your popsicle. Was that your experience?
Well, I guess Katy Perry is qualified to speak on the subject, as she grew up in Santa Barbara (I shot with her once, she’s really fun and down to earth). But to answer the question, yes, that was more or less my experience, too.
Why do you think they’re so different from girls in, say, Arizona?
A real California girl, and especially a California beach girl, just has this super-relaxed, confident, cool quality. The real natives also have a very special accent and way of talking, a languid drawn-out speech. I’d have to go on for ages to describe the rest.
There are a lot of small, pert breasts in this book – is that a Californian speciality?
Yes, it is in some way, I suppose. But, of course, California girls come in all sorts of wonderful shapes and sizes. It is a sort of active lifestyle here, especially at the beach, so perhaps that leads to the pert breasts.
You shot outside at some pretty spectacular Californian landscapes – did you get any curious looks from park rangers?
Someone called the police to complain about naked girls walking through their property. I think when that call came across the police radio, the officers rushed out with great enthusiasm. Two arrived and were very friendly, saying we could be naked as much as we liked so long as we stayed on our own property. One girl offered them a margarita and they reluctantly declined explaining they were still on duty.
What do you think sun-kissed Californian girls would make of sun-deprived British guys?
Everyone in California is a slight Anglophile. I think it goes back to the Sixties and the cross-pollination of the music scenes here and in the UK at that time. So British guys, especially if they play up the accent a bit, can clean up with the girls here – and probably the paler the better. Book your flights now, boys.
