With Sufjan Stevens and Beirut for peers, sonic wizardry is kind of a prerequisite for a modern-day troubadour. Happily, Andrew Bird’s pop arsenal is up to task.
While recent efforts have included film soundtracks (he makes a key musical intervention in the new Muppets movie) and seven-minute baroque-pop jaunts, Bird has stripped back for upcoming LP Break It Yourself. Lead track “Eyeoneye” is all breezy melodies, hazy riffs and notably competent whistling. The rest of Break It Yourself promises eclectic pop brilliance—and a St Vincent collaboration.
